I've been barely following this thread (I develop in trays), but this caught
my attention. I work for a manufacturer, so the issue of tooling cost is
quite familiar. There's probably a helluva lot more people shooting (and
processing) 4x5 film, so the cost of tooling can be amortized more quickly,
given the larger sales volume, compared to 8x10. But forty grand for
plastic-injection tooling sounds way expensive, especially for a product
that presumably does not require tight tolerances and super high quality
tooling. If anyone wants to make huge quantities of plastic processing
drums, contact me, I have good connections in Taiwan and experience in
injection molding. (My guess is that ultimately the homemade Home Depot
approach is more suitable).
