Judy,
Among other things I have, lately, been doing inkjet prints in color, duotone and monochrome. Up to know I have done little in color because they were not archival but Epson's new 2000P printer, which uses pigments rather than dyes for ink, produces beautiful, highly color-saturated prints in sizes up to 13 x 19 in. on a special mat paper. Epson claims that these are archival to 200 years. Independent tests show that they are resistant to fading for at least 100 years and probably more. Based on cost of ink and paper alone, the prints are much cheaper than Ilfochrome and not as contrasty. If you wish, you can put a roll of paper on the printer and go up to 13 x 40 in.
You are quite right. All the work is done before pushing the button. One thing that must be done first is getting your printer/monitor calibrated so that what you print is the same as, or very close to what you see on the screen.
