Eric, if I knew to do all that, would I be sitting here tearing my hair
out and beating my head against the wall? Except i think that there's a
curse on this G4 that makes everybody in the line drop 50 points of IQ,
and all connections turn to stone...and it's not just Netscape... Yes,
I'm running 9.2.2, or put an "i" in that, and make it ruining, or vice
versa.

For one example, I spent 3 hours on tech support with Adaptec today, doing
everything their "expert" could think of to get Netscape, Explorer,
whatever, whoever, to download the upgrade of their SCSI card, well it was
a tense session (starting with the fact that they INSISTED I get the
serial number off the scsi card INSIDE the computer, but all those green
cards looked alike to me except some were big & some were tiny and NONE of
them had legible serial numbers, or names, or personalities, or mothers
and fathers or the milk, even the skim milk, of human kindness), so
finally they "made an exception" and gave me an incident number, but to
make a 3 hour saga short (I never did make it to the gym, which didn't
break my heart as it was 27 degrees F out & I decided I could forgo the
mile walk), finally on 5th try the thing downloaded, got into my system
file, etc., and test showed it worked, that is, it would go on sleep &
wake up without crashing... Trouble is that was only a SHORT sleep. After
an hour sleep I got a CRASH message, though no real crash (yes, they do
tease), BUT, something about it destroyed the autosleep -- The phone rang
& I couldn't get off for an hour, the thing stayed on.

Nearly every day since June has had similar episode. I've spent a great
deal of time & truly excellent amounts of money on experts, hauled
the thing to Tekserv (using a lifetime of marital brownie points for the
several trips by car), of course ripping out the connections for all
peripherals to get there, and spent 3 days sitting on the bench with their
bakery take-a-number -- that solved one little problem tho not the one i
went up there for, which was an error of Apple Tech support which-- FLASH!
Stop the Press!! -- has got its head up its ass. Hope you will excuse the
vulgarity, it's been a hard day, month, trimester.

I do not mention the sessions with Adobe about the disappearing Pagemaker
program, another saga entirely... That was indeed finally diagnosed by a
local expert, and in case you're wondering, ADOBE DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE, I
mean not even a shred... I should demand my $25 back but lack the
strength. Pagemaker still crashes at about 10 minute intervals, but no
longer disappears. Don't tell me to get Indesign, it causes brain damage
with red boxes, & my brain is damaged enough.

Maybe the expert at Adaptec picked the wrong driver -- the one Tekserv
installed was fine (lost in a clean install that didn't solve a different
problem) -- if I could get through to Tekserv on the phone I'd ask them,
but 6 hours on hold is my limit... So happy days, I get to speak to my
friend Carl at Adaptec again tomorrow... He deserves it.
