Yes, older Macs are a problem with regards to USB. When my wife upgraded to
a new computer
last fall, we went through hell (and back again) trying to stabilize our
scsi devices with adapters, cards, and cables. We had very little luck. We
solved the problems by using an older Mac (mine) to connect most of these
peripherals to, then we bought a new scanner (Epson 2450), and hope to get
our money's worth out of these other aging devices (including an Epson
1520) before we have to replace them.

It's ugly.
