The hexagonal shape sure seems to point at lens flare. What is the
shape of the stopped-down iris in the lens you used for the negative?
Did you use a lens hood? Was the lens coated? My uncoated lenses seem
to demand a lot of extra care to prevent this from occurring. Lens
flare is my best guess. Sounds like you may have a photoshop question
to ask Dan this Thursday!
