I want to thank David Jackson for his suggestions and questions. Below are
some facts concerning my question.

>1. Color or BW prints?

color exclusively.

>2. In either case you will want to deal with the correct color calibration
>of you computer monitor as a starting point.

The work I'll be doing is very specific and focused. It involves making
high quality copies, refuced in size, of some old prints like the line art
used to illustrate Dickens's novels and 18th century botanical prints. This
means the material will all be scanned under known conditions, not coming
from digital cameras. My thoughts are to skip monitor calibration. In other
words, I plan to scan one of Kodak's scientific-grade color bar charts and
then experiment with my printer until I have to color match down perfectly.
I would then record the adjustments required to the test scan and adjust
all scans the same amount. This means skipping monitor calibration because
monitor color-accuracy isn't important.

>3. The Printer.

Printer must produce high quality prints and have continuous ink system
available. Therefore, I believe it will be an Epson.

>4. Frequency, Quantity of printing / Costs.

Very frequent. Very high. Will print on high-quality photo glossy stock
purchased in bulk. Want to refill cartridges.

>5. Paper and ink combinations.

Willing to experiment and research to get maximum value for investment.

Ain't that the truth! Which is one reason I asked the question and again
want to thank D.J. for his response.
