Hello Pablo, my 1200 was set up to be an in house proof printer for
commercial photo and design clients. So, I didn't "care" about archival.
It is set up and calibrated with Cone's "Darn Good Inks" which are
actually a "bargain set".
More out of habit than study I use Burkholder's colorized method (my
negs are red/orange). I "think" that using multiple inks (magenta,
yellow, and black) gives me a smoother neg than using black ink only. I
have modified all of his curves to fit my inks, and printing materials.
In my case, with my inks and materials, I get slightly straighter curves
than Dan. I suspect most/all of us use modified versions of his curves,
and that he expects us to.
Try putting the "fruit hatted lady" file (ole something) that Dan
includes in his book and the step wedge together on a file and printing
that on the 1200 in black ink and in colorized. Print them as alt
prints, then adjust your curves and repeat. Hopefully you will see a
road worth traveling! Without a reflective densitometer it takes me
about 6 prints to perfect a curve for a new material.
Using this setup (old printer, cheap inks) I can't make a digital neg
that is as "technically perfect" as my in camera 11x14 HP5 negs. But,
for many uses and images it is a wonderful system and I think I'm making
negs as good as my previous optical/wet enlarged negs.
