Chris and John,

Several years ago I had the opportunity to tour a Crane Company paper mill
to see the manufacturing process up close. As it happened, the day I was
there the huge boiler was stewing flax vegetable matter, rather than cotton,
to make 'linen paper' and the smell was quite overpowering. I was told that
cotton did not have the awful smell. But both end products--linen and cotton
stationary sheets--are highly archival.---Carl
