eric,

A step tablet (31 step (I know I wrote 32—must have been thinking of the
two-step)) or a 21 step tablet, or step wedge, or sensitivity guide if you are
touchy-feely is used to get your standard printing time and to monitor your
exposures to ensure consistency in exposure/chemistry/humidity, etc.

the stop watch is much easier to hang around your neck than a darkroom timer
since I tend to walk around a lot and I use it to monitor my humidity pre-soak
of the paper, drying time of the paper/emulsion, development time, clearing
time & wash time.

the hygrometer is used to monitor the humidity. I have one with a remote
sensor, so I can monitor from my workroom and don't need to run into my
humidification room (small bathroom) all the time to check. I think humidity is
probably one of the most important factors in alt printing that often goes
uncontrolled. With humidity I also take into account the dry down time.
