The reason is that the ideal negative for a gum print has a d max of around
0.7. To obtain a greater range in the print you need to expose more than once.
A good silver gelatine negative is best, coating the paper first with less
pigment and giving it a long exposure, and more pigment and less exposure for
subsequent coatings. Just get your image right in Photoshop, invert it and
reverse it and then print the neg. One negative should do the job,
