Paul,
Try some transparent pigments of complimentary colors for your deep shadows.
Thalo green and perylene marron mix a very nice transparent black taht can
be tuned from cool (grren side) to neutral to warm (red side). I frequently
use quinacridone red or rose and thalo green (along the same line that
Christina suggested). I found it better to apply separate layers of
complimentary colors rather then mix them and apply one layer. If your
prints are red / brown in nature adding just a shadow layer of thalo green
adds a lot od dimension to the print.
