Barry, et al -- you probably know that there was a vogue for a method
called by various names, including "living valentine" -- or so they
claimed in the photo magazines of early 20th century. The young lady
(usually young lady) fastened a negative of her sweetheart (or other
heartthrob) to whatever area of skin seemed appropriate... and sunbathed.
The claim was that a picture was thereby manifested.... tho I don't recall
seeing one reproduced in the "literature" ... it may have been.

Apples were also supposedly used for simpler imagery, possibly even
messages like "delicious."
