I believe Axon did the majority of the Pt/Pd prints for Mapplethorpe.
However Sal Lopes (Jamaica Plain, MA) had printed some as well. If you
happen to see any Mapplethorpe Pt/Pd prints on fabric, it was Sal who
first showed the Mapplethorpe Camp this after yours truly showed Sal
some of my work on fabric. Sal was printing some of the Mapplethorpe
work at the time (around 1990) and thought it would be interesting to
print "fashion" photos on fabric. I actually purchased the bolt of
fabric, reselling it to Sal at cost. Sal taught me the Pt/Pd process in
1985-1986.
Sal Lopes has printed much of Mary Ellen Mark's Pt/Pd prints including
the circus portfolio.
Sal has published his own work on the Vietnam Memorial ("The Wall"),
people "Living with AIDS", and loves to photograph horses. He has a
business of printing photographs for others and is the best Pt/Pd
printer who's work I have seen. He used to have a web site, but I think
that has been discontinued. If anyone would like to contact Sal, let me
know off list and I will provide his phone and address.
