Re: a lot of over-exposed negatives: what to do?

someone in this thread mentioned Farmer's Reducer as a means to
salvage overdense negatives. Strangely, no one took this up. But
IMHO the use of Farmer's is very sound advice. Farmer can do wonders
for you, if handled with care. Be aware that in the usual proportion
of ferri to hypo it nibbles away the shadows first, thus increasing
the density range of the negative -- just what you need for most ALT
processes. You may even make it a general method: Start by
overexposing and overdeloping and then reduce the negative in
Farmer's to what looks right to your eyes. Then reduce exposure
and/or development until you need Farmer's only occasionally. There
are limits to this method. E.g. I wouldn't recommend it for
negatives to be enlarged. But for ALT-contact printing techniques
this is a low frustration road to success.
