For whatever process:
Just make some prints from any negatives to get a generic basic feel for
the particular printing process. One will likely find room for much
improvement.
Then, refine the negative so as to be the best for that printing
process. Chapter 3 of my guide (web site link below) can help with
this. Training the eye and understanding the negative and the printing
process will help.
Then, refine both the printing process and the negative for the best
results for those particular photographs.
Remember that altering materials or part of the process may require some
altering of the negative.
If unsatisfied with that process, try another. But it is best to
attempt mastering one process at a time. Trick is to find what you like
and stick with it. There really is a reason for the saying "less is
more". Better to master a single process to get what you want, than to
endlessly scramble amongst many.
