A really great book for Photoshop and learning how to make selections is "Photoshop Channel Chops" by David Bidney. This was written for PS 4 but the lessons still apply to later versions. It is concise and very readable by novice users but at the same time doesn't have an insipid cutesy pandering presentation like many books of it's ilk, IMO.
I got lucky and found mine at Kudzu books (a close out book store) for $5.95, on Amazon it goes for about $30-$40.
