I've found just about any brush works. My favorite brush is an old mostly
worn out house paint brush that is very coarse and leaves great (IMO) brush
marks

That's pretty cheap. :)
I noticed you had some questions on digital negs.
I currently print my negs on Epson transparency material using Dan
Burkholder's Spectral negative method.
I've found it compares quite well with prints made from my 4x5 film negs,
smearing wasn't a problems once I printed on the right side of the media
and I've found them reasonably durable.
Once I run out I plan to try Pictorio but still with my stock color Epson
inks.
