If I may interject something here. I tone prior to fixing. The highlights
turn cooler and the midtones and shadows have a warm mauve brown. But I'm
also adding gold to the sensitizer. I pull the print prior to getting the
high light color that I want to see. I also tone in a flat bottomed tray
with small amounts of toner. I save the used toner and sometimes mix it with
fresh to slow the process. DMAX seems to be increased. I use Crane's Natural
White Wove (aka Cover 90) most of the time.

I've never tried diluting the gold toner to get a split-tone.

I usually tone by inspection after fixing the print in 2 successive baths of
2% sodium thiosulphate for 1.5 minutes each. I typically print on Crane's
ecruwhite Kid Finish Stationery. The paper is warm and the image goes a
cool purple so I end up with cool shadows and warmer highlights with this
combination.

It works grea - even when mixed it with KAuCl2 which is used for gold
plating (not AuCl3!)... IME it's hard to split tone with it, it tones
the shadows and highlights in the same moment. And it works very fast
when new (was turning my Vandykes to black in not more than 45 - 60
secs). Capacity is also good and it keeps well (was working good even
months after mixing it). It also cures the bronzing problem in the edges
(if present).

Joe, do you dilute the toner in order to split tone? (My attempts with
undiluted toner ended with gray highlights and midtones + relatively
warm shadows - but shadows were not as warm as they were in the untoned
print.) Can you please describe your procedure?

Clerc's thiourea-gold toner. The formula can be found online in Wynn
White's article on VDB at the unblinkingeye.com site.
