Vandyke brown is a fairly easy process. The paper does have an effect but
should not be a major factor.
The negative is all-important. You need a dense negative with lots of
contrast. A negative that would require a no. 0 or 1 contrast filter or
paper if printed in silver. Judy is right. Do not dry with heat since it
will reslut in at least the loss of one grade of contrast. Try making some
new negatives using ortho-litho film and Dektol 1:5 r use Tri-X or HP5 and
over expose 2 stops and double or triple the development time. Don't be
afraid to give your VDB paper a good exposure since the process is
self-masking. Overexposure is better than underexposure. If the print looks
good before you wash it in water, it is under exposed.
