A proper fume hood is the right solution. You can get by with any arrangement that draws large quantities of air over your shoulder, past the work surface, and outside -- such as a good, strong window fan blowing out. Do be careful WHERE it is blowing -- not nice to asphyxiate the neighbors (no matter how much you may think they deserve it...). Kitchen range hoods are typically insufficient, although building an extension chamber (with, for example, corrugated cardboard and artists' tape) can make a big difference.
